What is Montessori?

Understanding the Montessori Method

The Montessori Method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over 100 years ago, is a unique, child-centered approach to education. Based on extensive scientific observation, it is designed to nurture a child's natural desire for knowledge and ability to learn independently.

This approach focuses on the development of the whole child—physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively—by creating a supportive and carefully prepared learning environment.

KEY PRINCIPLES

Mixed-Age Classrooms

Children of different ages learn from and with each other.

Student-Led Learning

Students have the freedom to choose activities from a range of options, fostering independence and curiosity.

Uninterrupted Work Periods

Extended blocks of time (ideally three hours) allow for deep focus and concentration.

Discovery-Based Learning

Students learn through hands-on engagement with specialized, natural materials, rather than by direct instruction.

Prepared Environment

The classroom is thoughtfully organized with beautiful, accessible materials that are appropriate for the children's size and development.

Freedom of Movement

Children are encouraged to move freely within the classroom as they work.

Trained Montessori Guides

Educators are highly skilled in observing each child's individual characteristics, talents, and learning style, guiding them rather than simply teaching them.
