Algebra 1

Instructor: Lisa Cato

Schedule: Monday/Wednesdays 10:50-11:50am

After 19 years as a Chemical Engineer in manufacturing and consulting, Lisa left the work force in 2010 to homeschool her three girls. She was part of the Classical Conversations community in Simpsonville for 15 years. She has also completed her 2nd year teaching Chemistry at Velos and also works as an assistant/bookkeeper for a local architect.  She enjoys gardening and reading in her free time. Her oldest daughter graduates Clemson University in May 2025, her middle daughter is a rising junior at USC, and her youngest daughter is a rising 10th grader at Southside Christian School.

Algebra 1 
This class will provide the student with a foundation for higher high school mathematics.

It will cover:

  • simplifying algebraic expressions

    • rational

    • irrational

    • polynomial expressions

  • solving algebraic equations

    • ​linear equations

    • quadratic equations

  • graphing

    • ​linear equations

    • inequalities equations

    • systems and functions 


Algebra 1 Parent Expectations
Parents are expected to work with their student at home to help him/her understand the material and complete the problems.

Class time includes

  • lecture time covering algebraic concepts

  • chapter review

  • working through problems

  • answering questions


Tests are to be administered at home. 

ENROLLMENT

Admissions Process

To enroll your child, please follow these steps:

  1. Submit an application with your chosen classes.

  2. Speak/Email with the Student Liaison if needed to confirm your student's schedule.

  3. Receive Registration Invoice.

  4. Complete and submit Student Contract which includes the Release of Liability, Signed Understanding of Handbook Policies and Family Agreement, Emergency Medical and Transportation Release Form, Emergency Contact and Pick-up Card, and Photography permission and release.

  5. For returning families, priority enrollment is given before registration opens to new families.

2025 Updates for Middle School and High School – Ages 12+

  • Transitioning to an à la carte system for flexibility

    • Middle School Core Classes (Math, ELA, Science) meet Tuesday & Thursday

    • High School Core Classes (Math, ELA, Science) meet Monday & Wednesday

  • Placement exams may be required for core class registration

  • A variety of enrichment classes will be offered Monday-Thursday

  • Families pay per class, with pricing varying by subject and length

  • Administrators will assist in crafting a personalized education plan that best meets each student's needs for returning families
